began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at age five under the tutelage of Marcelo and Silvio Behring in Nova Ipanema, Rio de Janiero, Brazil. He began his elite training at age thirteen under Jorge Pereira, who helped develop the early stages of his game. As an eighteen year old blue belt, he moved to the Gracie Barra Academy to study under Master Carlos Gracie Jr. and Renzo Gracie. After just two years under the tutelage of the Gracie Barra Academy, he was promoted to the acclaimed rank of black belt and began his quest to conquer almost every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu title. Some of these titles include the Brazilian, Pan American, and World Championship. He was also voted the most technical competitor in ADCC 2001. In 2000, Schembri took his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arsenal to the world of Mixed Martial Arts and competed on the largest stage in Japan, the Pride Fighting Championship. There he fought some of Japan’s best fighters and even held a knockout victory over world famous Kazushi Sakuraba a.k.a. ” the Gracie Hunter”. In 2004, Schembri began teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba, Brazil. During his time there, he trained world renowned fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, and Murilo “Ninja” Rua. Today, he shares his knowledge and life’s work with the new generation of martial artists of all ages and backgrounds at his academy in Lawndale, CA, (a 15 minute drive from LAX).
started his journey in the gentle art in 2008 under Professor Leandro Nyza in Honolulu, HI. He started training as a means of staying in shape, and to learn self defense. Having trained under Professor Nyza for two years and earning his blue belt, Professor Andrew moved to California and with the suggestion of Professor Nyza, Professor Andrew joined the Nino Schembri Academy in 2010. Professor Andrew would later be promoted to every belt there after by Professor Nino before earning his black belt in 2019. Professor Andrew enjoys teaching self defenses courses along with arrest and control techniques to law enforcement officials. Professor Andrew has been an active law enforcement officer for 15 years.
